Operation: Retribution #2 - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 2000.

Deployment and Mission: Search and Destroy / Rapid Escalation.

Primary Objective: Take and Hold.

Detachment: Gladius Task Force.

Opponent's Detachment: Warpforged Cabal.

The first stage of this operation began with a frontal assault by the Rift Wardens at a Thousand Sons defense point at the base of Mount Sybo. The Rift Wardens captured the objective and breached the enemy lines. The site exchanged hands several times however, during periods of heavy combat.

The plan for the battle was straightforward for both sides. The Rift Wardens wanted to break through the Thousand Son's defences, while the traitor legion's aim was to defend the area long enough for a two-pronged counter-offensive from the south.

After three days of intense fighting, the Thousand Sons managed to repel a direct assault by Arthurus and his company. The struggle for control forced the enemy sorcerer lord to start the counterattack earlier than planned. The site was captured and this victory proved to be the turning point in the tide of war. Having suffered crippling losses, the space marines had no choice but to leave the site to the enemy.

After three days of intense fighting, the corps-sized 1st Polish Army under General Franciszek Latinik managed to repel a direct assault by six Red Army rifle divisions at Radzymin and Ossów. The struggle for control of Radzymin forced General Józef Haller, commander of the Polish Northern Front, to start the 5th Army's counterattack earlier than planned. Radzymin was recaptured on August 15, and this victory proved to be one of the turning points of the battle of Warsaw. The strategic counteroffensive was successful, pushing Soviet forces away from Radzymin and Warsaw and eventually crippling four Soviet armies.

Operation: Retribution #1 - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 2000.

Deployment and Mission: Tipping Point / Smoke and Mirrors.

Primary Objective: Purge the Foe.

Detachment: Anvil Task Force.

Opponent's Detachment: Cult Of Magic.

Operation: Retribution was a swiftly enacted military operation by the Rift Wardens and was one of three battles fought at the base of Mount Sybo, the base of operations for the Thousand Sons on Vigilus, in which the Rift Wardens captured the approach to the mines within the mountain. Even the presence of Ahriman could not prevent the Rift Wardens enacting their retribution among the traitor legion.

Retaliation - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 2000.

Deployment and Mission: Crucible Of Battle / Inspired Leadership.

Primary Objective: Unexploded Ordnance.

Detachment: Anvil Task Force.

Opponent's Detachment: Cult Of Magic.

In the aftermath of recent battles, Magnus the Red led his legion in a brutal assault on the Imperial positions below Mount Sybo. The goal was the total obliteration of the Rift Warden forces present - a goal which Magnus concluded would lead to significant losses on the space marine chapter and this would lead to a decisive victory in the area. After initial successes, in which the Imperial forces present retreated out into the desert wastes, the Thousand Sons overextended themselves. The Rift Wardens did indeed suffer terrible loses but it was not so destructive a victory as Magnus had planned. Instead, it just galvanized the chapter into a hatred of the traitor legion.

The Hills of Mount Sybo - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 2000.

Deployment and Mission: Search and Destroy / Prepared Positions.

Primary Objective: Supply Drop.

Detachment: Gladius Task Force.

Opponents Detachment: Hexwarp Thrallband.

The battle for the foothills of Mount Sybo was a military campaign during the war for Vigilus that lasted for nearly sex months, in which the Thousand Sons, under Ahriman, repulsed attacks by the Rift Wardens on the outer mine complexes after heavy fighting.

After several successful engagements where the Rift Wardens managed to seize control over the territory at the base of the volcano, the chapter attacked the central mine workings, which had been abandoned and subsequently occupied by Ahriman and his forces. His aim was control strategically located defence points, in order to keep the Imperial forces away from the legions objectives. After heavy fighting, the Rift Wardens were able to capture key locations in the area.

By the time the campaign ended, the front had encircled the entire the mountain, and Ahriman's forces held the most vital defense points against the space marine forces. Ultimately, the space marines were unable to breach these defense lines and the victory went to the Thousand Sons.

Second Battle For Mount Sybo - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 1000.

Deployment and Mission: Crucible Of Battle / Hidden Supplies.

Primary Objective: Deploy Servo Skulls.

Detachment: Gladius Strike Force.

Opponent's Detachment: Cult Of Magic.

After a lengthy siege, the Thousand Sons legion at Mount Sybo launched an assault to drive the Rift Wardens out, crush them one and for all. An army of rhubric marines and tzaangor's marched from the Thousand Sons fortress, through their defences and slammed into the space marine lines. From the positions the Thousand Sons held, they advanced on three flanks and although they sustained heavy bolter fire, they continued to march on. The attack was swift and brutal, and the Thousand Sons captured the Rift Warden positions, forcing them out into the wastelands. Although Arthurus wanted to stay and fight, Lorgraine convinced him to reign in his desire and return to the Imperial lines. The Thousand Sons weren't going anywhere and the chapter needed to regroup and rearm. Grudgingly, Arthurus agreed and ordered a fall back, leaving Mount Sybo in the hands of the enemy.

Seige of Malbolge - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 1000.

Mission: Sacred Ground.

Secondary Objectives: Assassination, Engage On All Fronts and Retrieve Nephilim Data.

Opponent's Secondary Objectives: Engage On All Fronts, Grind Them Down and Mutate Landscape.

When not engaging in the continuous wars across Vigilus, Arthurus had his marines occupy and reinforce an old fortress known as Malbolge. This would serve as their own command base away from the Imperial command. The Rift Wardens operated out of this fortress for over a year before it came under attack by the forces of Chaos.

Day 1 to 5.

On the first day, Arthurus received information that a battalion of Thousand Sons were advancing through the wastelands towards Malbolge with obvious intent to assault the fortress. On day two, scout teams spotted them on the horizon engaging Astra Militarum patrols but still on course towards the fortress. On day three land speeders and outriders sortied towards the approaching the foe. Skirmishes took place with enemy vanguard patrols and late in the afternoon the rumble of artillery was heard which raised hopes that the threat of attack would be lifted after two days the wastelands went silent.

On day four, Fortress Malbolge had been surrounded and the fortress defences began speculative bombardments on large clusters of enemy positions, which had little effect. On day five, an outrider force sallied forth from the fortress towards the south and an inconclusive skirmish was fought out in the wastelands. None returned.

Day 6.

At noon on the sixth day, enemy bombardment and heavy weapons fire commenced on the fortress walls. Within hours the walls were severely damaged and the Rift Wardens were forced to the reinforced central structures. The Thousand Sons artillery concentrated on the permanent fortifications and wherever the Rift Wardens had bolstered barricades. Huge holes were blown in the walls and one shot detonated an ammunition supply killing a number of marines and serfs. The Rift Wardens attempted to reply to the enemy bombardment but the damage had become so severe that the fortress defences had fallen silent, and the chapter had little heavy weapons available to return significant fire.

Day 7 to 8.

After a massive psychic explosion, Arthurus was laid low severely injured during the night of day 7/8. Captain Galadhus took command and his inspiring words raised the morale of the chapter. When the outer walls fell the Thousand Sons marched inside in an attempt to occupy the site. The resulting battle was the beginning of the end.

Day 9 to 10.

Further squads of Rubric Marines advanced into the deluge of bolter and plasma fire and reached the central structures where the Rift Wardens defended. Many of the Rubric marines were gunned down out in the open although as more and more entered Malbolge, the Rift Wardens were forced to abandon certain locations and bolster others. With reluctance Galadhus requested evacuation as soon as possible. The Thousand Sons bombardment began again, reducing more and more of Malbolge to dust around the Rift Wardens.

The artillery soon smashed artillery and infantry positions. The Rift Wardens were soon forced to hunker down behind walls and in makeshift trenches as their defences came apart around them. Parties of enemy marines probed these new defences but concentrated bolter fire forced them to retire to the outer walls.

Day 11 to 12.

The weight of the Thousand Sons attacked increased on the north-east quadrant of the ruined fortress, forcing the defenders to bottleneck their positions and it soon became apparent that the enemy was looking to herd the Rift Wardens into specific overcrowded areas. Galadhus expected the main assault to come any time now as there was nowhere else to fall back to unless evacuation arrived.

The Rift Wardens withstood constant enemy assaults and sustained a great many casualties. At mid-afternoon on the twelfth day aid finally came with the arrival of several Thunderhawk transports from the orbiting fleet above. The remaining battle brothers and Arthurus were evacuated but not before the Thousand Sons were punished for the actions under the extreme firepower of the Thunderhawks. The survivors were immediately evacuated back to the fleet.

Meanwhile down below, the Thousand Sons, bolstered by the reanimation of their fallen Rubrics, continued on towards the hive sprawls beyond the wastelands. When recovered, Arthurus was shocked and dismayed at how powerful a force the sons of Magnus had become. He gathered about him his officers and captains, and began to formulate a plan to destroy the Thousand Sons forces on Vigilus once and for all.

Battle for Mount Sybo - Vigilus Wastelands

Points: 1000.

Mission: Crossfire.

Secondary Objectives: Linebreaker, Oaths of Moment and Slay The Warlord.

Opponent's Secondary Objectives: Attrition, Engage On All Fronts and Mutate Landscape.

When Imperial Navy patrols detected activity at the abandoned geothermal mining station at the base of the active volcano Mount Sybo, they reported it to command. Further patrols confirmed the presence of Thousand Sons traitor marines at the site. As the closest Imperial strike force to the site, the Rift Wardens were dispatched the handle the traitor threat and determine their activities within.

The initial clashes were around the defensive gates at the base of the volcano on the northern side. The Thousand Son attacks were irresistible and the Rift Wardens were prevented from making progress. Chapter master Artherus attempted to split his forces into two companies but the effort was stopped by a swift counter attack by the enemy forces. What should have been a swift battle has bogged down into a stalemate with neither side granting ground to the enemy. Unwilling to retreat any further, Artherus has elected to stay and fight to the bitter end.
